It’s sad how ignorant the general populace is on geography.
Polls are regularly taken that show that adults can’t find the most basic places on a map. And if they can’t, there’s a good chance that their children can’t either.
That’s where today’s FamilyFirst pick comes in. It’s dedicated to expanding geographical knowledge the fun way. It’s presented by National Geographic, and it’s called My Wonderful World. Here’s their mission:

A new National Geographic-Roper survey shows half of young Americans can’t locate world powers like Japan and India. Twenty percent can’t even find the Pacific Ocean. Without geography, our children aren’t ready for the world. That’s why we started My Wonderful World. It’s a National Geographic-led campaign—backed by a coalition of major national partners—to expand geographic learning in school, at home, and in the community. We want to give our kids the power of global knowledge.
Check out the Games and Cool Stuff. They consist of links to other family-safe sites that offer fun learning tools that will teach your kids (and yourself!) geography.
Try the geographical quiz. See if you can beat yours truly’s 80%. Or, if you REALLY want to be humbled, try the Geospy test. I thought I knew Africa. I was wrong.
The blog is a good read, too. So check out the site, and turn your kids loose on it so that their geographical knowledge will start growing!
